Gods and Guitars

Posted on 16 July 2010 Gavin Glenn

Seeking the sacred in post-1690s popular music.

With chapters such as ‘Church in a guitar case’ and ‘Outrageous religion’, Michael Gilmour challenges his readers to learn to listen to popular music in a new way. By exploring the output of artists such as Cat Stevens, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, U2 and Madonna, he considers the ways and reasons why these secular composers adopted religious phrases, motifs and sacred texts in articulating each generation’s spiritual quests.
