Interpreting the Bible's Women in the Arts and Music

In this book, Dan Clanton explores the Bible’s presentations of Eve, Sarah and Hagar, Ruth, Judith and Susanna. Using re-presentations of their stories in painting, film, novel, children’s books, opera and theology, the author prompts the reader to undertake new ways of reading, seeing, hearing and understanding these sometimes problematic narratives. His interpretive traditions range from rabbinic commentary to contemporary television programs and in the process he encourages the reader to discover new dimensions of some leading female characters in the Old Testament. His chapter titles include: ‘Trollops and temptresses’ (Judith) and ‘A hard-headed woman’ (Eve)
